5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   June 25, 2009

I purchased one of these recently after seeing one in action and this unit is a significant impovement on the NB100 and the Asus/EeePC alternatives including the larger screen and significantly improved battery life.

Working with laptops, I've always been hesitant about netbooks but this machine builds it up perfectly, it's functional, easy to use and relativly straight forward to use. Significant advantages including the Intel Atom processor makes it very quick to browse, and also I believe this is the first netbook to have a built in HDD recovery partition so if you need to recover the system, you don't need a CD Drive.

Thanks to a Windows XP official download (not included) this system also supports .iso mounting and playback, so if you have a PC with a CD Drive you can create an .iso image and use a USB device to run software.

Only real disadvantage is the fact it does not come with a recovery CD in the box, but it does have the tools to create discs on the system. I would definatly advise getting an external CD/DVD drive if your getting a netbook, if anything software-related were to happen to damage the operating system it's the first thing your gonna need.

Overall I would definatly recommend this unit, and with the extended battery life (max of 9 hours - not really tested this yet but I have been installing software for 4 hours and still have 65% battery life) I would go for this model over the slightly cheaper model.

5 out of 5 stars After a few days   July 12, 2009

I've now had this netbook for a few days, and I can say that I'm thoroughly impressed with it. The main selling points for me were the keyboard, the screen and the battery life, so I'll mention them individually below.

Keyboard:
The keys are individiually spaced out with a gap between them, meaning you won't make many sitakes by hitting two keys at once as you may on other netbooks. The lay out is almost full sized too, so you don't feel that your fingers and hands are cramped, even after long periods of usage (using MSN for example).

Screen:
It's very bright and clear, and despite the glossy cover to it, I have had no problem viewing the screen at all.

Battery Life:
I haven't been able to get 9 hours out of it yet, but the battery life is certainly long enough for constant usage throughut the afternoon and evening. I'm sure if I were more careful (reducing the brightness, less graphically intense web browsing etc), I'd be able to eek out about 9 hours.

The webcam and built in microphone is very good for Skype usage and is still quite good in low-light conditions. The inbuilt speaker is pretty feeble, but again, it's good enough for use with Skype. The touchpad is quite large and easy to use with the side of the touchpad enabled for scrolling use.

This is the perfect computer if you're just using it for communication, youtube and some office work. It's light and doesn't get that warm so it's also perfect to have on your lap while watching tv.

I've also purchased a 2Gb ram chip which was very easy to install - just one screw to a flap on the underside.

Overall, this is a netbook which has learned from it's competitors mistakes in a neat, good looking package, which I would recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent machine   August 20, 2009

I too did my research, wading through the reviews and specs of Acer, Samsung, Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus and others. The reviews of the NB200 were all positive, so I decided on this model, and I am very glad I did. The fit and finish is excellent - the textured lid of the NB200-10Z is much better than the finger-print attracting shiny black plastic of other machines.

Like another reviewer, I knew the built in speaker was poor, my solution is the same - I have purchased the awesome little (tangerine sized) XMI X-mini II Mini Speaker. The built in speaker is fine for windows' beeps and noises, but you wouldn't want to listen to music through it.

I also purchased a very slim external DVD rewriter and after downloading the K-lite codec pack I could watch DVDs full-screen with no problems.
The battery life is great, I am looking forward to taking this on a long flight later in the year.

I was nearly going to wait for the NB200-123 with built-in 3G, but it will be £90 more expensive - save some money and buy a PAYG 3G dongle or use the bluetooth feature on your phone.

I use the hibernate feature all the time, just close the notebook, it takes around 10 seconds for windows to be ready again when you open it.

The power of the NB200 surprised me, I was not expecting much more than web browsing and word documents, but I am pleased to say I am able to run my 2D CAD software, iTunes, full-screen videos etc with no problems, it is a very impressive machine. My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.

If like me you read a lot of reviews, before you buy, Stop Now and go and Buy this.
Forget the others this will do the job and a lot more.
I have had my NB200 3 weeks, i can'not fault it.
I download from the net,i play games on the net and i watch movies on it.
I would say i am getting 71/2 to 8 hours use, no problem.
Ashamed to say this is not the netbook i set out to buy,but im glad i did.
10/10

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba NB200 -10z. Perfect portability -long battery life   November 28, 2009

I have owned this netbook for a month. It is perfect to use in every regard. I have owned 4 previous laptops and this is the level of portability that I've always hoped to achieve without losing out on major features. The keyboard is spaced out (even for a man's hands) and well planned, with all keys intuitively to hand and a firm but light feel to them. Mouse pad and controls are excellent. The unit is robust and has a solidly constructed feel to it. The screen is sharp and clear and its colours display my photos accurately. One of my hobbies is photography. If you were to do intensive photo-editing your eyes would be more comfortable with a 20 inch screen or larger. But for display and short sessions of photo-editing it's fine. For writing reports or long documents and web browsing it is no problem even up to 2/3 hrs at a time. If your eyesight is not the best, set the zoom level to 125% (control shown at bottom of screen)whilst web browsing. Use the F11 key to display all the screen content as full as possible and to get rid of irritating browser headers when not needed.
It's set up to hibernate when lid closes which is good because all open files are saved to hard disk until switched on again. Then power button restarts in a matter of seconds. The battery power is said by Toshiba to be 9 hrs. In regular use I achieve that. It's so relaxing not to be worrying whether your battery will last over a couple of hours in a session. Surfing and writing using word processing software is fast with no 'hangs or freezes'. My unit came with Windows XP. The netbook is much easier to use in the home. I leave it on a coffee table by my side and it's light enough to pick it up and down to use like a book. If placed on knee it's so light; it can get warm after a time but not unbearably so like all the laptops I have owned before. Great for travel as light, slim and smaller than a laptop.
What don't I like? Toshiba do not supply a 'Back up' disk to use if Windows completely crashes. They charge £30 to purchase one. Another point to note is that any software on disk that you wish to download will need the use of a stand-alone CD\DVD player as netbooks don't have these drives. Toshiba provides a back up programme on the Netbook to copy to a CD\DVD but it's very tricky to access and understand. Sadly I will be buying the £30 disk. Toshiba should have done the professional thing and for a few pence more thrown in the disk with this very nice piece of kit. At least the service line at Toshiba responds quickly and quite efficiently with an 'English as first language' speaker.
But as for the netbook itself; it's transformed for the good how I access the net at home or on my travels. By the way, the wireless access to the net was set up in 5 minutes. All it wanted for secure access was the code on the back of router\modem and I was in. Ensure that the separate orange light on the front rim of netbook shows an aerial symbol like the one on the F8 key. This will indicate that your wireless set up (and bluetooth) is switched on for the netbook. You maay need to press F8 twice. I am so impressed with this model that I'm buying another one in blue as an Xmas gift for a relative. Lastly, it looks great too.
