5 out of 5 stars Samsung N140 is the Rolls Royce of the netbook world   October 10, 2009

I have had the Samsung N140 now for several weeks and am very pleased with it. The best way to describe it is as a deluxe version of the NC-10. The first thing that strikes you on opening it up is how different it looks from both the NC-10 and N110 : it has a good-quality, superbright non-glossy wide screen which looks far more chic than its predecessors; the silver edges give it an expensive-looking appearance and it seems stronger than the NC-10 as well as being more lightweight and without the finger-smudging problem. It has a fabulous 6-cell battery that SAMSUNG claims might be able to last for up to 11 hours. This is something of an exaggeration, but you should be able to get around 7+ hours out of it and more if you upgrade it to a 9-cell one. Its wifi is the best currently on the market since it can cope with b, g and also N. It has quite good speakers for its size and easily copes with BBC iplayer and their equivalents. Its RAM memory is 800MHz and not 667MHZ as you find on the NC-10. It should therefore be faster. However, you would be advised to upgrade it to 2Gb as there are times when it can appear slow. When you are in battery mode, the power settings are set to maximise battery life which means a reduction in performance which can lead to problems when watching online TV. However, you can resolve the problem by changing the power options to normal or even maximum performance. The battery life is long even when on maximum performance in my experience. I am very satisfied with my netbook and made the right choice in buying this one after waiting so long for a proper non-glossy, fast-wifi model to appear on the market and voilà, here it is.

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away by the Samsung N140   October 12, 2009

I received this netbook a few weeks ago and wanted to wait a few weeks to write a review in case any problems came up. Needless to say this is the first computer that has actually being a pleasure to set up. Everything is already done for you and you simply make a few decisions during the initial set up process and you're away.

Not being a gamer I've actually used this netbook to replace my PC and it has been working fine running the likes of Spotify, Firefox, Microsoft Office and downloading all at once. Setting it up to run using a large monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse hasn't been a problem and the change in speed between this and my old PC is hardly noticeable.

The keyboard and touchpad are a pleasure to use, although getting used to a slightly smaller keyboard takes a bit of practice! The 3 USB ports are conveniently located (2 on 1 side 1 on the other). As I mentioned the speed has been great and the speakers perform better than my larger portable ones. The battery life appears good although I've mostly been running it off the mains. The wireless internet connection has been perfect and far better than my previous PC which had an external aerial.

It even came with a 1 year free trail of Microsoft Office which I was unaware of, oh and it's close to silent when it's switched on. I'd love to pick a fault with this laptop but for running the usual programmes like I-Player, Firefox, Spotify and Microsoft Office its perfect, even when connected up to a separate keyboard and screen it shows no sign of slowing.

If this is what you're looking for then buy it!

5 out of 5 stars totally impressed - much better than I ever expected   October 20, 2009

the n140 is amazing and so much more than I expected for the price.
It is tiny - not bigger or thicker than a book - but it has a good keyboard and a very clear matte screen. The charger is much smaller than on our other laptops. The battery seems to last a long time - I haven't yet tried how long. The n140 is very easy to set up. It arrived yesterday; after charging the battery I managed to be on the internet via our home wifi within an hour.
there is a decent amount of software included: microsoft office (for 1 year i believe).
There is a neat little card reader on the front; I plugged the card from my camera in and could immediately watch my photos without further fuss.

The bag that comes with the netbook is a nice neoprene type bag, so no need to rush and buy another one.

What I liked less: the netbook comes with a cd with drivers' software but the n140 has no cd drive?! Samsung needs to rethink that and give the software on a card if that is possible.

Although the netbook is not slow at all, i think i will increase the ram memory from 1gb to 2gb, as this doesn't cost much and might improve the performance. unfortunately i couldn't find the n140 on the crucial website.
i suppose i will have to wait until they include it.

Initially, the fonts on the screen were much too small; I managed to solve this partially; some text still appears in tiny letters, such as the n140 manual available on the desktop.

At first the speakers didn't work. I tried looking for help on the Samsung website but that didn't work. Eventually, the speakers woke up after I reset them a few times.

My only real criticism of the n140 is its touchpad, which is tiny, recessed and the click areas at the bottom are hard to control. Typing is fine, but the touchpad is irritating. i am sure that I will get used to it, but it must be posssible to design a better touchpad.

All in all, a very nice little computer for very good value.

5 out of 5 stars Great!   October 18, 2009

Just look at the Samsung N140 and it will be hard to tell the difference between it and the Samsung NC10. But turn this on and you'll find it is so much better.
The Samsung N140 still has the same Intel Atom inside, also with the usual 1GB of RAM, its improved battery and neat keypad make it look spectacular. With a 9 hour battery life it will be excellent for train rides to work, long essays to write, and just catching up with others on your social networking site.
I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for an upgrade at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant netbook   October 23, 2009

The N140 is a brilliant netbook. It connected to my wireless router with no difficulty - it's great to be able to use it anywhere in the house. It's much lighter than a normal laptop, even though the keyboard is still easy to type on. The built-in webcam works well with Skype - much easier to use than a desktop pc.

The touchpad is ok for brief use - I find that it sometimes jumps to weblinks just by hovering over the link - a usb mouse is much better for extended use.

If you are concerned that the print on the screen will be too small, remember that you can go to Start/Control Panel/Display, choose the Appearance tab, and change the Font size to Large or even Extra Large.

I find the volume rather low for use with BBC IPlayer - I've bought a XMI X-mini II Mini Speaker and a Lupo usb charger. The speaker is small and portable, and surprisingly powerful.

Overall, I'm very pleased that I've bought the N140 - highly recommended!
