5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Buy   January 9, 2010

I've had the Samsung n140 for just over a month now and I have to say it's a fantastic netbook; I purchased the XP version since at the time the Windows 7 version was a good £40 extra and I didn't have any interest in the extra 90gb of hard drive capacity (or Win7 Basic, bleh!). I did however immediately upon delivery upgrade the netbook to Windows 7 Professional provided free by uni.

I write this review basically to give a quick technical overview for any issues you may be thinking you'll encounter, and to disparage any of the other negative reviews I read on Amazon prior to purchasing myself.

Firstly; the screen DOES tilt back far enough, clearly reviewers on Amazon are for the most part hunchbacked or something as I read so many people complaining about this... I have not once wanted it to tilt back any further than it can; most of the time I don't even use it at max angle, the notion that this is something to complain about or even not purchase the item for is something I fail to be able to fathom.

For the tech savvy, putting Windows 7 on this netbook manually was simple, I just partitioned it with Acronis (any partition editor will do) and installed Windows 7 (via a quick win7>usb stick tutorial), and it found all the drivers itself, then just downloaded all the little helpful Samsung apps for the n140 from their website (enables fn keys etc.).

If you're Ubuntu inclined, this is also just as easy- once again install via usb instructions; the only issue I encountered was with the wireless, at the time of writing there are no linux drivers available for the wireless card integrated so you have to use the Windows ones via ndiswrapper; and even then they don't support WEP (but open and WPA are fine), aside from that everything works natively, even webcam and bluetooth.

I haven't bothered upgrading it to 2gb ram yet but I can see myself doing it the nearby future; 1gb does fine for me at the moment, most of my netbooking revolves loosely around FireFox, MSN, E-Mail, PuTTy and films. A quick note on the battery; I had all of what I just listed open and I then watched an episode of Misfits (45 mins); took the battery down 10-15% ish- honestly, it's a truly astonishing battery. I use it on the Samsung extended battery-life settings (where it only charges up to 80%) to prolong the life of the battery, a good tip I feel.

5 out of 5 stars It just works!   November 3, 2009

A computer where everything worked first time without a fuss - wow! From the set-up, to creating a backup, to updates (even Samsung's own), so many hurdles and it didn't crash or conflict, just did the job even with the new Windows 7. Don't think I ever had that with a Windows PC in decades. It's a nice looker too and light. Battery is impressive, but haven't had it long enough to know if it's 11 hours - gut feel is that it's probably 8-9hrs. Track pad also works fabulous. For a netbook price you can't go wrong. Not the fastest machine though.

5 out of 5 stars If you want a good netbook - look at this   December 29, 2009

I have had my N140 for about 6 weeks now. I initially went for the WIN7 version - and so glad I changed back to the XP version and saved £20. It worked well with the 1GB memory - but I put it up to 2GB (it really is one screw - pull out the old and plug in the new) - GIMP & Photoshop run easily as well as on my big laptop.
It is quick, quiet and well laid out. The keyboard is superb for its size. The touchpad was better when I downloaded a fresh driver from Samsung - though I find the scroll a bit touchy and the buttons a bit heavy to use. Screen is brilliant and great for photos or video. The colours vibrant and plenty of brightness if you want it - I normally have mine down to about half. The sound is adequate for a netbook - but won't blast your ears - I normally use earphones. Wifi - no problem and the layout of the 3 USB's so much better at the 2 sides rather than the back and front. The charger is small, light with adequate lead.
First job was to get rid of all the bloatware - MS Office that leaves you stuck after a year, Mcafree etc. Download firefox - the new fast version, open office, avgfree antivirus, GIMP, Infraview, Audiocity, Spiderplayer - why pay for inferior products when you can have the best for free - without bells and whistles of course.
I may go back to Win7 in two or three years when they have it sorted out - or Linux (PLOS), but old XP is fine for my needs and more importantly runs the best software still!
Weight and convenience - great - can just hand it around for others to see my photos - no fuss whatsoever!

Change it for another model or make NO-WAY!!!
PS Black looks good... - white - see one before you choose it!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Netbook - Time for Upgrade to Windows 7   November 17, 2009

For about £20 more than the Windows XP N140 you can upgrade to the Windows 7. After two weeks I can say that I'm overall satisfied (not wowed, but happy nonetheless). Boot up time is much less than my 4GB desktop or the 2GB Sony Vaio - both of which run XP. In fairness, I've only got AVG and Skype on the Samsung's start up menu but my gut feeling is that it is lot faster in an "apples to apples" comparison. No pun intended.

The look is much cleaner in terms of fonts, icons, etc. And Microsoft seems to have gone out of its way to be more deferential to its users in terms of optionality (for instance upgrades). Where I have issue is on Windows 7 and its use (more precisely the lack of My Documents), I need to spend a bit more time with the new directory system. I also have problems with a driver on my Doro 225ipc VOIP phone (but reading the reviews this seems to be a hangover from Vista). The battery time is nearer 8 hours (on normal settings - i.e. WiFi on). Samsung have included a smart mouse pad as well that allows H/V scrolling, page turning, but I'm a bit of a blind cobbler so I can't get these functions to work consistently on the small mouse pad. The function ESC key provides a quick shut down but when restarting Firefox seems to hang. Its a minor quibble in the great scheme of things.

Disclosure: I'm don't use the Samsung for memory heavy image programmes such as Photoshop but I am a professional Excel developer.

Hope the review was useful to you.

5 out of 5 stars Great PC but invest in 2GB memory   December 4, 2009

Lovely nachine. Windows 7 lack of dsktop picture change facility is get aroundable with Stardock but to be quite honest not totally ideal (can't see shops displaying it on their shelves as a result). Invest in the additional memory as otherwise it is sluggiush (if you choose to have McAfee).
