5 out of 5 stars Very solid netbook   March 23, 2010

I bought this a few weeks ago as a replacement for my Asus EEE 701, the original netbook, which came out in late 2007. The Asus in many ways was great--a cheap and tiny machine with a lot of capabilities. The 7 inch screen and inadequate keyboard were ultimately limiting, and battery life reasonable but no more. Hence an upgrade to this Samsung.

The N210 is larger, but still very portable and acceptably light. General build quality seems good. Its appearance and finish is very smart, although my preference would not have been for the shiny lid. The 10 inch screen itself however has a matt finish which is infinitely better than the fashionable glossy screens, which have problems with reflections. The screen resolution of 1024 x 600 is still smaller than I would like, but is as good as you will currently get in 10 inches without spending hundreds more, and works much better for web pages than 800 pixel wide screens, perhaps because 1024 pixels is a common design size for the web. The keyboard and touchpad are excellent; the small right shift key is the only misfeature. The wired and wireless connectivity is comprehensive, barring a 3G modem, which is still a surprising rarity in netbooks. Battery life in my hands seems not too far from the manufacturer's claims: I would say a touch over 10 hours of light use.

The new Atom N450 CPU used here does not have the speed of a Core i7 or some such heavy duty processor, but the power usage is less than previous Atom generations (and much less than an i7), and its capabilities are more than good enough for the vast majority of everyday tasks like web browsing or word processing. You would not choose to perform heavy CPU tasks like video editing or cutting-edge games on an Atom-based computer.

The provided Windows 7 Starter Edition is just about adequate, but in view of the designed limitations, I reluctantly followed Microsoft's plan: an upgrade to Home Premium. I was also able to run a Linux live DVD (Knoppix) although the Linux wireless drivers for this machine are still maturing at the time of writing.

As for most new PCs today, various pieces of trial software are installed. I simply removed the software, not a difficult task. The annoyance disappears quickly.

Overall I remain very pleased with this smart netbook, with its good screen and keyboard, and excellent battery life. Highly recommended.

Bought this about 6 weeks, plus a 2gb memory expansion (really easy to install) and an external CD drive.

Excellent so far. Connected wi-fi at home with no trouble, I like the Homegroup feature in W7 that allows me to look at folders in my PC. Have used on train to London and back, with the battery lasting all day - did about 5 hours work and the only problem I had was that the train bounced around too much to do fiddly Excel formulae.. Runs Office 2007 perfectly, great for access to the net. Have today loaded all my music on to it and the only negative is that the speakers sound a bit tinny, which didn't really surpise me. Found the web-cam, but haven't used it to contact anyone yet.

Can't fault it, would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great netbook   April 21, 2010

Needed a netbook for frequent use when travelling, especially overseas. Wanted something light with good battery life, quick internet access and built-in webcam for skype. N210 has fitted the bill very well indeed and also looks and "feels" great which is a bonus. As others have written, I will probably want to uninstall some of the unnecessary software that comes with it to speed things up.
Haven't yet seen how long it goes on a single charge because I've only had it on for few hours at a time so far but seems it would probably go full working day without recharge.
I bought a separate sleeve for it because I thought it came without but it did come with its own sleeve which is fine for everyday use. I now use the other sleeve to store the power supply, cables, separate disk drive, etc.

I am very pleased with this netbook I bought it after reading a recommendation from Windows in their monthly magazine. I still choose to do the bulk of my work from my main computer, however, this netbook is lightweight for carrying and is efficient and effective for the purpose it was designed for.

Have to admit this is my first netbook, and I was very reluctant about the purchase as I am used to laptops which have a certain degree of performance (gaming laptops). But the aim of purchaisng this netbook was to have an ultra portable, long battery life, web/email on the move. This machine fits perfectly, having long battery life, very portable and believe it or not not that much slow!

If you are after a good netbook, this seems to suit you!
